Terminius 2.0e ReadMe file
--------------------------
Surprize! Yeah, I'm still around and Terminus appears to still have
a pulse, even if it was in stasis for quite awhile there...
What's here is a way overdue update of Terminus. Not much as far as
new stuff, bugfixes and some changes mostly. I also nuked the expiration
code so that what happened in May won't reoccur. The history file that
came with this sums up what's in this release.
If this archive is instaled over an already existing, and unregistered,
release of Terminus it will *not* reset the evaluation period. That time
limit, IMHO, is meant to exist from the first time you install Terminus.
If you were to delete all related Terminus files prior to installing this
version then the period will be reset to a full 30 days, otherwise it is
expired from the outset of use.
As you may or may not be aware of, I've taken on a new job (a new
career, actually) that meant relocating the family 175 miles north. It
requires a major part of my day unlike my previous occupation. The past
year has been tough but things do appear to be leveling off now.
The other major event was the BBS. Most of you know that the BBS
bought the farm awhile back. That downtime lead to some rather nasty
rumors too, but I'll let the existence of 2.0e speak for me rather than
wasting time trying to chase down the twit(s) responsible for that tripe.
Anyways, where am I going from here? Basically, I'm focusing on more
bugfixes for the immediate future, definately the Winter and early
Spring for certain. When the BBS went down I lost the database of bug
reports that I kept on it. So, there's going to be some bugs still in
this release that have been reported before. Repost them and I'll make
sure that I get to them eventually.
RIP is still high on my list of additions. I was on the way there,
but I wasn't happy with the way it was turning out, most add-ons tend to
turn out like that anyway. There's also a new release of RIP due to surface
soon. Knowing what the first one was like I'm wondering if a port is going
to be even worth it now.
I'll have a firmer idea once a specification is available to take a look
at. However, my main concern is two-fold. First, is the new version even
practical on the Amiga now? Second, if not, will the old version still be
supported in a backward compatible way?
The PeeCee world is littered with the waste of short lived and/or
constantly mutating "standards". It could go either way. There's also the
possibility of HTML (you know, what WorldWideWeb browsers like Mosaic use)
migrating into modemland. The hypertext links might not be too practical,
but V.34 sure makes the argument for RIP's horrid script "language" pretty
much moot. But, HTML has it's own problems with UniSys asking for licensing
fees to use GIF display algorithms now.
The short list of other additions is related to more commands for the
script language, Kermit and maybe Hydra. I guess auto-uploads for
ZMODEM too, enough people have asked for it and with Forsberg going the
proprietary route with MobyTurbo, ZMODEM-90 et al, what's the point of
staying true to the specification any longer?
In closing, all I can say is that the upheaval that caused me to drop
out of sight is behind me now (and hopefully, won't be repeated). I also
can't promise a major online presence anymore due to the pressures on
the free time I do have. I've had to drop my GEnie and BIX accounts in
favor of using the BBS is my primary point of contact. CompuServe will
still be an alternate and SWREG is now an option for CIS users wishing to
register Terminus. I've also set up a registration contact in Australia,
please see the file Registration.Aus for info.
